NET ZERO BUILDINGS | Engineering and Civics for Climate Justice
[3 STEM Clock Hours] Apply NGSS/STEM, Civics Education, Climate Justice, and Common Core to design net zero water and net zero energy homes, schools, and office buildings. Green building architects from the Miller Hull Partnership will be joining us!

About the Event
This PBL Curriculum Lab will be facilitated like a professional Design Studio on how to design net zero water and net zero energy homes, schools, and office buildings. Green building architects Alex Ianchenko and Kristen Dotson from the Miller Hull Partnership will be coaching us throughout the Lab. Secondary teachers involved in economics, civics, equity, science, technology, engineering, math, and common core, are encouraged to attend. Passionate students from the Sustainability Ambassadors Leadership Development Program will also be attending. Through this lively teaching and learning practicum, we will explore architectural design principles, engineering practices, green jobs, policy development, and equity. Inquiries will include: Can we design homes, schools, and office buildings that help us achieve our city’s climate action goals within the next two to three decades? Can we make homes both green and affordable? Can a school building meet the design challenges of net zero water and net zero energy? Can we create thousands of family-wage green jobs as we retrofit our neighborhoods? Who's already working on this? And how can our students apply academic rigor as they advance the technical, financial, and moral case for net zero homes, schools, or office buildings?
Teacher Learning Goals
- Demonstrate an understanding of how students can meet NGSS, STEM, Social Studies, or Common Core Standards in the context of designing net zero water and net zero energy homes, schools, and office buildings.
- Demonstrate the intersectionality between green buildings, equity, jobs, and your city’s climate action plan.
- Design, adopt or refine one or more lesson ideas using the content and instructional strategies provided.
- Apply STEM literacy across disciplines and promote college/career pathways that expand students’ thinking about the growing green jobs sector.
