Mia Nelson
UW Environmental Studies Capstone
Mia is a current Senior at the University of Washington studying Environmental Studies within the Program of the Environment. Over the past 3 years she has learned about various examples of climate action and communication local to the Seattle area as well as environmental issues across the world. She is an advocate for intersectionality within conversations about climate and believes that a more interconnected view of environmental issues will lead to more inclusive and equitable solutions. A Washington state local, she enjoys hiking, climbing, and jumping into frigid alpine lakes no matter the season. When inside, she enjoys painting, reading, and hanging out with her dog, Molly. She enjoys traveling to Japan to visit her family as well as going on long road trips with her friends, especially if it is to the Oregon coast. Mia hopes to pursue a career in environmental stewardship in a capacity that allows her to participate in action driven climate policy within her local communities. Her experience being a woman of color and an ethnically mixed person raised between two cultures, her dreams of creating communities across cultures focused around sustainability, working together towards the common goal of achieving and implementing sustainable living systems is one she hopes to reach. Ranging from sustainable urban development, ecological restoration, responsible/inclusive behavior in the outdoors, her interests are broad but all close to her heart!
