The pristine rows of houses complement each other, placed in their exact positions to appeal to the viewer’s eye. The structure of every house in my neighborhood is almost identical, not a single pair of houses without a nourished lawn between them.
The Homeowners Association (HOA) expects each household within my community to maintain the exteriors of our houses, including the basic necessities required to sustain lawns. But why? Why do we need to mow our lawns and waste so much energy? Why do we need to water our lawns and waste so much water? Why do we need lawns in the first place, and why do we choose day in and day out to waste our time on them? If our society won’t change the norms, we will work around them.
